Cultural misunderstanding

A Cultural misunderstanding often occurs to people who travel abroad. Especially for people who need to communicate with native people. It occurs when something like gestures, a word, object, almost anything you can think have different meanings in two or more cultures. But the question is why the meaning of the same thing is different between two cultures?

Let’s explain it by an example.  Jokes rely on a creative use of language and sometimes can create misunderstanding. Because it reflects their cultural background, their life styles, their history etc ...so that they would create misunderstanding for the receiver from another culture.

But some misunderstandings are not as simple as jokes that you just do not understand them. Some misunderstandings refer to different attitudes and have greater consequences. For example some behaviors in different cultures mean rudeness.  People in some cultures stand very close to each other to speak to one another and consider it rudeness to stand away and in other cultures standing a few feet away is a norm unless it's a romantic involvement.

Learning language and studying tourism guide can help to solve misunderstanding. But  there is a common guide for avoiding the behavior that might be misunderstood, English people have a proverb, They say “when in Rome do as the Romans do”  that means when traveling, follow the customs of local people.

Cross-cultural communication

Communicating in the 21st century is complex. Development in communication makes the world a small village so that people from different cultures and countries around the world can interact to one another easily. Since each culture has its own set of assumptions, face-to-face communication becomes difficult, so it is where cross cultural complexity occurs.

Cross-cultural communication is the phrase that describes the ability to form and improve relationships with people from other culture. It is based on knowledge of many factors, such as the other culture's values, perceptions, manners etc. Cross-cultural communication involves a skill component that may best be learned through instruction and practice.

The important question in Cross-cultural communication is what the most barriers to communication? Concerning this question some researchers suggest that negligence is the most common barrier to effective cross-cultural communication. It also means that we will not judge a person from another culture by our own cultural values.

An effective strategy for improving cross-cultural communication is what experts call “active listening.” This technique involves restating the other speaker’s statements to ensure you understand their meaning, and then the speaker can confirm or revise of our perception. By this method the correct communication is facilitated.

استفاده موثر از قدرت برای نفوذ بر دیگران

در کلاس رفتار سازمانی جناب آقای دکتر محسن قدمی، ترجمه فصل اول بخش رهبری از کتاب اصول رفتار سازمانی ادوین لاک (2009) بر عهده من گذاشته شد؛ این ترجمه را در فروردین سال 1393 ارائه کردم که به پیوست جهت بهره برداری ارائه می‌گردد:

در خصوص استراتژی‌های تحقیقاتی، مطالعه و معرفی استراتژی قوم نگاری بر عهده من گذاشته شد؛ که در اردیبهشت ماه سال 1393 در کلاس درس روش تحقیق سرکار خانم دکتر فاطمه فراهانی ارائه کردم.
